As a first world energy source, there’s only one problem with wind power: and that would be the W-I-N-D.

The United States of America didn’t become the richest and most powerful Nation on earth running on sunshine and breezes.

To become the industrial juggernaut and technological master that it is, Americans burnt mountains of the black stuff; harnessed nuclear energy early and on a grand scale; and, more recently, thanks to its shale oil/gas revolution, profited from plummeting gas and electricity prices, rekindling manufacturing and industry at a point when millions of American blue-collar jobs were under threat.

On average, Americans pay 15 cents per KWh for power, which compares rather favourably with the prices suffered in Australia’s wind power capital, South Australia: at 47 cents per KWh, South Australians pay more than three times the cost paid by…

The wind industry is a lot like Peter Pan – the perpetual infant, hard-wired to fight, kick and scream to avoid the stark reality of adulthood.

How often have we heard the yarn about wind power needing those life-giving subsidies (filched in their hundreds of $billions from taxpayers and power consumers) to continue for just that little bit longer to help it “mature”?

And how, if the subsidies are chopped now, the chance of a “brilliant, clean, green” renewable energy future will be lost, forever?

Cut the subsidies, and this so-called ‘industry’ would disappear in a heartbeat. That mathematical certainty applies everywhere, including the USA.

Among the wind cult, it’s apparently the ‘aesthetics’ of these things that titillate the senses and get their juices flowing: just knowing that they’re out there somewhere (in someone else’s backyard, not their own) gently caressing the breezes, is more than enough for starry-eyed wind worshippers.

Ignore the hundreds of $billions squandered on subsidies for a power generation system abandoned centuries ago, for pretty obvious reasons; ignore the chaotic, occasional delivery of power which, but for those subsidies, has no commercial value because it can’t be delivered as and when power consumers want it; ignore rocketing retail power prices in places like Denmark, Germany, Ontario and South Australia (all said to run on sunshine and/or breezes and all paying the highest power prices in the world); and ignore the millions of birds and bats, sliced, diced and belted to Kingdom Come each…

Wind and sun worshipping eco-zealots don’t hold a monopoly on hypocrisy, but come very close. As nasty as they are sanctimonious, the more active and vociferous members of the wind cult have no difficulty in justifying the destruction of pristine landscapes; the dismemberment of once cohesive, rural communities; the creation of toxic waste lands in China (where the rare earths essential to wind turbines are processed); power prices that punish the poorest and most vulnerable in society; and barely bat an eyelid at the slaughter of millions upon millions of birds and bats, across the globe.

Germany has been held up as the renewable energy poster child. However, with its landscapes being trashed and wildlife perpetually walloped out of existence, the wind industry is fast becoming environmentalists’ public enemy number one.

Desperation is a stinky cologne and South Australia’s vapid Premier, Jay Weatherill is drenched in it.

With an election in March, and terrified that another wind power output collapse will deliver another mass load shedding event or statewide blackout, Weatherill plugged into a mega-battery supplied by Elon musk for a cool $150 million, that would provide the state with power for all of four minutes.

And, true to his ‘green’ street-cred, he lined up 276MW worth of diesel fuelled jet engines (Open Cycle Gas/Diesel Turbines) for a figure believed to be north of $400 million. Although Jay is being pretty coy about the cost to South Australia’s taxpayers.

Wind ‘powered’ Germany, Denmark and South Australia pay the highest power prices in the world. And you’d be forgiven for thinking that a Rolls-Royce power price comes with a Rolls-Royce quality of service.
